What is Com Gia Dinh?

Inspired by the resilience and courage of the Vietnamese community that came together after Black April (April 30, 1975), especially in San Jose, CA, we present the Cơm Gia Đình Anthology.

Since that pivotal moment, the Vietnamese community has shown incredible strength and perseverance in resettling and reestablishing their lives here in Santa Clara County. At the heart of this journey has always been the family meal. Ask anyone in the Vietnamese American community, and they will tell you that you can find the best Vietnamese dish in their own home. These dishes are more than just food; they are symbols of family, unity, and the enduring values we hold dear.

In times of conflict and hardship, the family meal was what brought everyone together. It was over these meals that discussions about school, work, love, marriage, and family took place.

This anthology is a celebration of those nourishing moments that have shaped our Vietnamese American community and a testament to our collective ability to rise again and pursue our dreams.

Cơm Gia Đình literally translates to family meal. It combines two great values in Vietnamese identity; food and family. This idea of a family meal presents itself as a time to be together that goes further than just eating but the stories and conversations that transpire over the dinner table. The Cơm Gia Đình anthology and cookbook is a collection of recipes and stories that represent our diasporic community over the course of the fifty years that have passed since our community set its foot in the United States. Through this storied-cookbook, we intend to give you glimpses of families all around San Jose and the Bay Area about the experiences that make up our history and culture as Vietnamese Americans.
